Held annually on a Friday evening in June, the Maraton državnosti (‘Marathon of Statehood′) commemorates Slovenia's declaration of independence from Yugoslavia on 25 June 1991.

The event features a 10.5km race (one lap) and a half marathon (two laps).

The start and finish are at the ‘Dvorana Zlatorog’ handball arena on the northern edge of Celje, a town of about 38,000 people, located on the motorway and railway line between Ljubljana and Maribor.

The race follows an undulating out-and-back route through rolling countryside to the very pretty reservoir of Šmartinsko jezero (pictured).

Last year, around 150 runners took part in the Maraton državnosti races.
