The Leipzig Marathon features a 42km marathon, a 21km half marathon, a 10k run, a 4k fun run, and various races for children, inline skaters and wheelchair athletes. In 2012, the half marathon was the most popular distance with over 2300 finishers. The 10k had 1500 finishers, and over 600 completed the full marathon. Start and finish is at Leipzig's modern football arena (pictured above) which has been built into the old Zentralstadion — formerly Germany's biggest stadium. The 42km marathon consists of two laps of a gently undulating course through the southern and western parts of Leipzig, a dynamic and very green city with many parks, woods, lakes and rivers — great for running and cycling! The route takes runners to the city centre, through residential areas, and around the Völkerschlachtdenkmal, a 91-metre-high monument erected in 1913 to commemorate Napoleon's defeat in the "Battle of the Nations" near Leipzig in 1813. |
