Organized by the athletics club LCC-Wien, the Herbstmarathon offers a 7k race, a 21.1km half marathon, and a 42.2km marathon.

The route is a 7-kilometre loop, which is pancake-flat, traffic-free, and AIMS-certified. Participants in the full marathon run six laps and an additional 195 metres.

The course is entirely in the Prater, Vienna's largest public park.

Starting and finishing near the Ernst-Happel-Stadion—Austria's largest football stadium—the route runs largely out-and-back the Prater Hauptallee (pictured), an over 4-kilometre-long avenue, lined with chestnut trees.

In 2011, almost 1000 runners took part in the event. The marathon winners were Walter Götzinger (2:36:00) and Bettina Zelenka (3:06:42).
