13. Maratona d'Europa 2012
Trieste (Italy), Sunday 6 May 2012
13th European Marathon
17th European Two Castles Half Marathon
19th Bavisela non-competitive run
The Maratona d'Europa features an interesting and scenic point-to-point route along the Gulf of Trieste in the north-east of Italy. Around 700 runners took part in the last edition of the marathon, and 2000 in the half marathon. The most popular distance, however, was the 7km Bavisela, a hugely popular fun run with 10,000 and more participants every year. Start of the marathon is in the pleasant small town of Gradisca d'Isonzo. Along the route, participants pass Italy's largest military cemetery of World War I in Redipuglia, the shipbuilding town of Monfalcone, the castle and the cliffs of Duino and the castle of Miramare. Half marathon runners join the field at Duino, the 7k runners at Miramare. All routes finish on Piazza dell'Unità d'Italia, the magnificent main square of the port of Trieste. Most of the route is flat but there are some testing hills around Duino. Overall, the course drops about 30 metres from start to finish. In 2010, the marathon winners were Giacomo Licen Porro (2:32:21) and Eva Vignandel (3:09:37). Fabio Bernardi (1:08:29) and Alessandra Lena (1:22:33) celebrated victory in the half marathon. |
